What is Cataract Surgery?

Cataract surgery is a procedure designed to remove the clouded lens of your eye and replace it with a clear artificial lens, known as an intraocular lens (IOL). This helps restore vision and improve your ability to perform daily activities.

How is the Procedure Performed?

  1. Pre-Procedure Preparation
    • Before your surgery, Dr. Sumich or Dr. Lim will conduct a thorough assessment of your eyes, including precise measurements to determine the best lens implant for you.
    • Our friendly team will provide you detailed instructions on preparing for your procedure, such as what to expect, when to stop eating, when, what & how to use eye drops.
  2. Procedure Day
    • Cataract surgery is typically performed as a day procedure, meaning you can go home the same day.
    • You will receive anaesthetic eye drops to numb the eye, and a mild sedative may be provided to keep you relaxed.
    • The procedure usually takes about 30 minutes per eye, however expect to be at the day hospital for half a day.
  3. The Procedure
    • A tiny incision is made in the eye.
    • The clouded lens is gently broken up using ultrasound technology and is removed.
    • A new intraocular lens is inserted, restoring clear vision.
    • The incision is self-sealing, meaning stitches are rarely needed.

What to Expect After the Procedure

  • Most patients notice an improvement in their vision the next day and improves more over a few days and settles after 2 to 4 weeks.
  • Some mild discomfort or grittiness in the eye is normal for the first 24-48 hours.
  • You will need to use prescribed eye drops for a few weeks to aid healing and prevent infection.
  • A follow-up appointment will be scheduled to monitor your progress.

Common Concerns and Reassurance

  • Will I be awake during the procedure? Yes, but your eye will be numbed, and you may receive a mild sedative to help you stay comfortable.
  • Is it painful? No, most patients feel little to no discomfort during the procedure.
  • How soon can I return to normal activities? Many patients resume light activities within a few days, but it’s important to follow your doctor’s advice regarding driving and heavy lifting.
